Notably, he led the development of the Traditional Medicine chapter for ICD-11, enabling traditional medicine diagnoses and interventions to be systematically recorded, monitored, and analyzed worldwide - a groundbreaking step for research, regulation, and policy. His expertise in Ayurveda and TCIM, combined with global policy experience, helps guide member states in creating safe, effective, and sustainable national frameworks.
Dr. Krishnan’s research establishes globally accepted benchmarks, safety protocols, and evidence for traditional medicine, supporting the integration of ancient wisdom into resilient, modern societies.
He serves as the Head of the Integrative Medicine Program at Medanta – The Medicity, where his work focuses on building a sustainable and evidence-based model for integrating medical systems. His approach brings together clinical practice, research, standardized processes, clinical protocols, and innovative care models as a unified framework.
He is the originator of the “Axial Model” of Integrative Medicine, which is actively practiced at Medanta, and has identified 102 clinical conditions in which patients seek integrated care within a tertiary care setting. Under his leadership, complementary and integrative programs have been successfully embedded across multiple departments, including Cancer, Cardiology, Neurology, and Internal Medicine.
His contributions also include establishing three clinical protocols for minimally invasive thoracic surgery, chronic pelvic pain syndrome, and dengue management. He is currently engaged in collaborative drug research with CSIR, focusing on diabetes, thrombocytopenia, and solid tumors. His work in herbal drug discovery has resulted in granted patents in the United States and Europe, with several additional Indian patents under review.
In addition to his clinical and research achievements, he has published extensively in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He is also a founding member of the World Ayurveda Foundation and served as Secretary General for the World Ayurveda Congress in 2010, 2012, and 2014.
